  • Sunday, August 1, at 6:15 p.m.: Rumbafrica

    Sweet vocal harmonies and lilting dance rhythms of classic Zairian rumba as well as non-stop beat of modern Soukous. Part of the Sunday Evening Heritage Festival at the Newton Centre Green.
  • Tuesday, August 3, 5:30 p.m. to Dusk: Annual Picnic of the Friends of Hemlock Gorge Reservation. This special picnic-meeting begins at the new Echo Platform under Echo Bridge on the Newton side of the River at 5:30 with a very brief dedication ceremony.
    The picnic itself will take place at the Stone Barn. See the Friends' Upcoming Meetings page for parking and location information.
  • Wednesday, August 4, at 6:45 p.m.: Totem Pole Orchestra with Bob Bachelder
    Big band sounds of the 30's and 40's from the orchestra made famous at Norumbega Park in Auburndale.
     
    Pellegrini Park -- Hawthorne Street off Watertown Street.

  • Saturday, August 7: Newton Community Days at the Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead. Free admission to Newton residents.
  • Sunday, August 8: Newton Community Days at the Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead. Free admission to Newton residents.
  • Wednesday, August 11, 6:45 p.m.: Tom LaMark Orchestra
    Big band sounds with upbeat modern rhythms to the old favorites. (Rain date: August 12).
     
    West Newton Common is at Webster & Elm Sts. Take Washington St. West from W. Newton Square. Turn right onto Elm Rd.
    Part of the Dancing in the Parks series.
  • Saturday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m.: Walking Tour of the Newton Cemetary. The Newton Cemetery was established in 1855 and was one of the areas first garden cemeteries following in the footsteps of Mount Auburn in Cambridge. Join Museum Director David Olson and explore the site to discover some of the individuals who are interred there. Meet at the main entrance on Walnut Street, just down the street from the Newton Free Library. Free. Sponsored by the Newton History Museum
  • Wednesday, August 25, at 7:30 p.m.: Auditions for the fall production of Lend Me a Tenor staged by the Newton Country Players. See their web site for full details.
